Conservation & Giving Back Initiatives
Conservation is at the Core of Everything That We Do
Local Conservation Programmes
While staying with us at Roca River Camp, our guests have the opportunity to visit and make a contribution to local conservation trusts, including the Mara Elephant Project, The Mara Predator Project and The Anne Kent Taylor Fund, & The Mara Raptor Project.
We can organise for these incredible projects to do exclusive talks with our guests & for them to visit the projects and learn more about their incredible work in the Maasai Mara. We encourage our guests to make a donation to these causes during their visits, this is a nice way to contribute to conservation in Kenya, beyond their park entry fees.
Education Fundraising
Education is fundamental for the preservation of our communities and wildlife in Kenya. Not only is the Mobile Expeditions team committed to our local conservation efforts that form an integral part of educting the communities that we live among, but Ross and Caro have committed to supporting the young minds in both the Maasai Mara area, and in the Baringo area.
Through fundraising, they are able to provide much-needed funds for school fees for children in the areas that are so close to their heart.
Ruko Community Conservancy
Ruko is a community conservancy on the eastern shores of Lake Baringo. Ross and Caro were greatly involved in the setting up of the Ruko Community Wildlife Trust (RCWT) after clashes between the Pokot and Njemps brought their elders to the area looking for an urgent solution to ongoing tribal conflict.
Working in conjunction with the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), Ruko is a fair partnership between the Njemps and Pokot communities of Lake Baringo, whose aim is to restore and protect the region for the benefit of its wildlife and its communities.
To date, 34 Impala and 8 Rothchild’s giraffe have been successfully trans-located to the conservancy established on Ruko, and plans are underway to continue re-introducing wildlife species, namely plains game, to the area.
Our Local Conservation Partners
-
Mara Elephant Project
Human-Wildlife Conflict is an issue across Kenya, and particularly in the Mara, where communities depend on crops to sustain their families. The Mara Elephant Project protects both the community and the elephants through education, monitoring and evaluation in an effort to reduce poaching, conflict and habitat loss.
-
Mara Predator Project
The Mara Predator Project is building an online identification database of lions around the Maasai Mara. They work with lodges to establish a long-term, widespread monitoring system and raise awareness of conservation issues. Lions are at risk in the Mara where local communities raise livestock, and this conflict means that the population of lion (and other predators) are at risk
-
Anne K Taylor Fund
The Anne K Taylor Fund runs a number of projects in an effort to maintain the delicate balance between conservation and community development within the Maasai Mara ecosystem. They do this through education programmes, habitat protection, providing local communities with "bomas" for their livestock, womens' empowerment and women's health.
-
Mara Raptor Project
To conserve raptors the Mara Raptor Project acts upon the Kenya Bird of Prey Trust's mission by engaging in Monitoring & Research, Education & Outreach, Conservation Management and Rescue & Rehabilitation.

Beading Ladies
As a part of our commitment to the community that Roca River Camp is so closely related to, we love to support the local trade of the Maasai Community.
We are able to invite the ladies from the local community into camp, where they can sit with the guests, who can try their hand at the beading, but also engage with the local community in a relaxed environment. We particularly love this as an activity for a whole family, it is an interactive way for children and parents to learn from the local community, through chatting, song and learning the local craft.

Park & Royalty Fees
As a part of being within the National Reserve, we charge each of our guests a bednight royalty fee. This fee goes directly to the Narok County government and contributes to each of the families whose land we occupy for our lodges and camps.
